Introducing Our Practice Team 

All our practice staff are committed to providing you with the very best in animal healthcare. Our veterinary team has immense clinical experience gained over years in practice and we have all obtained high standards of professional qualification in several diverse fields. We are all general practitioner vets but we each have our areas of interest in small and large animal work.


Mr Gareth Mulligan

Gareth qualified from Reading University in 1989 and Bristol University in 1994. His main interest is in farm animal medicine, health and production. Gareth holds a certificate in Beef Cattle Practice. He is president of the West Wales Clinical Club and Neath Young Farmers Club. He is also a committee member of the South Wales Veterinary Association, the British Cattle Veterinary Association, the Sheep Veterinary Society and the British Veterinary Zoological Society. Outside of veterinary practice he is busy with his young family, a keen vegetable grower and follower of rugby - the Ospreys of course.

Catherine graduated from University College Dublin University in 2001. Her main interests are in the fields of canine and feline medicine. She is a member of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. In her spare time Catherine enjoys cooking, running and looking after her young family. Catherine became a partner in December 2010.

Richard qualified from Bristol University in July 2006 and joined Afon Vets in January 2007 having spent time travelling around the world. Richard has a certificate in surgery and is especially interested in orthopaedics. Outside work he enjoys a variety of sporting activities and is a keen football fan (Bolton Wanderers) and golfer.

Del joined Afon in 2008 after several spells with the practice as a locum. He qualified from the Royal Veterinay College London in 2000 and has worked in several mixed practices in the UK. Del has a particular interest in orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery. Outside work he is the practice globetrotter and a keen fisherman. Del became a partner in December 2010.

Sam joined Afon vets in 2008 and qualified from the Royal Veterinary College London in 1998. She has a keen interest in small animal medicine, acupuncture and surgery. Outside of work Sam is really busy looking after her young family and dogs.

Katie Lil qualified from Edinburgh University in 2008 and has been working at Afon since qualifying. She has a keen interest in dermatology, small animal medicine and surgery. She has a certificate in advanced veterinary practice Outside work she enjoys amateur dramatics, running and walking her dog.

Kate joined the practice in April 2010 having worked in Worcestershire following qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College London in 2008. Kate has a keen interest in feline medicine and is a certificate holder in feline studies. Outside of work Kate is an accomplished musician, playing in a local orchestra and is a great cook specialising in cakes.

Gemma qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2005. Gemma was appointed Head Nurse during 2006 having been with the practice since leaving school. Her duties include the day to day running of the nursing staff and surgical operating area. She is also responsible for overseeing the care and recuperation of the animals hospitalised at the practice. She is interested in cat behaviour.
